September 2021 Staff Spotlight - Corina Calvo
1. What is your role at EPIC 'Ohana? I am an ‘Ohana Conference Specialist (Coordinator)
2. What is your favorite EPIC ‘Ohana story? My favorite story is when I was working with a single father of five boys from Kaua'i. I had been assigned the case on my first year as a Specialist. During that time, I was only communicating with the mother as father was incarcerated at Saguaro in Arizona. I had run into challenges with setting up an ‘Ohana Conference as conflicts with scheduling came up between providers, the family and their supports. I also lost communication with mom at some point due to frustration in securing an OC date. She also gave up on her sobriety and became unresponsive to outreach efforts. Long story short—during Kaua’i’s OC sprint I connected with the father after he was released from Saguaro and he shared interest in reunifying with his boys. I jumped on that opportunity and proceeded with setting up his OC. A few months after the OC, the father was reunified with his boys then later his case closed with CWS. He was my first success story as I vowed to get an OC setup no matter how many tries I attempted. It was truly a mission moment I will never forget.
