Meet the EPIC ‘Ohana Board Members: Betty Ching
Clear, authentic communication is what Betty Ching holds most dear. In her work as a therapist, mediator, and social worker, empowering people to have a voice and speak their truth has always been Betty’s purpose. Back in 1996, when Arlynna Livingston, one of the founders of EPIC, invited Betty to participate in a pilot project based on innovative communication, Betty happily joined in. She has been part of the EPIC family ever since; first as a meeting recorder during the pilot project, then as a valued board member.
From the beginning, Betty saw `Ohana Conferences as providing the essential service of weaving the fabric of a community together by giving everyone a chance to speak and be heard. Through open and honest communication, she witnessed service delivery, that was once disjointed, shift to become more collaborative and effective. That shift helped not only the families involved with Child Welfare Services, but the social workers and service providers too.
25 years later, Betty is still a cheerleader of EPIC and an active board member. She says she still feels privileged to be on the board, and is in awe of the talent of the current board members. She also feels privileged to have watched EPIC grow and thrive over the years. All the amazing people who have joined EPIC’s staff, and the heart and soul that they put into their work, has been wonderful for her to witness and support. Betty is confident EPIC will continue to be a strong platform for courageous conversations and the positive changes those conversations can bring.
At EPIC, we’re grateful for Betty’s continuing support and inspiration. Her clarity of vision and communication has helped EPIC to truly become the Effective Planning and Innovative Communication agency that it is today. Mahalo Betty, we so appreciate you!
